Well I thought I would start a thread to help me ease my anticipation of the dunes. I talked to Jeff and he wanted some tips for getting ready for the dunes so here we go. Feel free to add to this..
Bike:
Wash it, wash the crap out of it. I good pressure washing is good for it. Get all the grease and oil residue out off of it, the sand will stick to it. That is the key here is protecting it from sand. This is some of the finest sand you will come across. I usually do this was at the car wash so I can spray it with wax. I good wax job keeps the sand from sticking. Scrub the chain off too, get all the residue off it, thats why I run o-ring chains. Check your bearings make sure they are tight. Clean and oil the filter the night before you load it for the trip. I prefer to change my oil the day before and right after I get back.
For you:
Asper-cream is awesome. You will never imagine the little aches and pains you will get, but drinking plenty of water helps with that. I drink ton's of water out there and cereal bars.

Oh and plan for everything. I bring an assortment of tools for just about every occasion in cluding electrical.

I use marine grade grease in all the joints until it gushes out and then wipe off all the execess and I mean all. the grease helps keep the sand on the outside not the inside of bearings ect. and when you get back you can grease it again to push any sand out with the old grease. then power wash clean.. I have never had a bearing failure or bushing failure using this method.
Polish and wax it to prestine condition. and lots of cash helps too.. ;D

You blow your HID's that easy . I did the HID conversion and love it, but changing my bulb isn't as easy as pulling it and switching It's pretty quick, but a job I wouldn't want to half ass

Man HID trouble would suck, I made it last year and a couple times in the trails this year I hope I don't have any trouble

No I have only pop'd one hid and that was due to condensation in the lens I washed it before we left and when we got down there it was dark first thing I did was turn the lights on poof it was blown.. Water and HIDs do not get along..
A few things I like to do before heading to the dunes
1.Clean reoil air filter I run a K&N with a prefilter a must in the sand. 2.Change the fuel filter. 3.Change Oil and run synthetic. since I run higher RPMs for longer periods.. 4.WD40 all the joint/pivot points it acts as a cleaner but evaporates enough does not collect sand. 5.Check wheel bearings, tierods, Hub bolts, Balljoints.. Had a tierod loose cause me to lose control ending with needing rotator cuff surgery and a few cracked ribs.. Made for a sucky week of riding.. Did it half hr after we arrived for 4 days of riding.. 6.Everything is twice the price down there so replacing it before you go can save you lots of $$$ 7.Tune for running 110 octane if you are going to run it.. Take a jet 1 or 2 sizes each direction from what you are running now.. 8.Tire patches or plugs are a must. 9.extra chain or at minimum master link to buy one down there is expensive.. on that note I run a none oring chain at the dunes lighter and stays smoother longer and a shot of WD 40 and it is smooth as new. Been running them on motorcycles for 50 yrs or more can't be that bad.. 10.I take extra fuel like 20 gals worth. it is usually cheaper in Ks and if I do not use it all it goes in the truck for the trip home.. money well spent. and it is from a station you are used to and kinda trust.. 11. Suntan lotion SPF 100 for the under neath side of your arms the sand reflects sunlight and burns places that do not usually get sunburnt.. makes for miserable riding if you get sunburnt. Also Lip balm never fails someone forgets thiers and pays the price not many people will share lipe balm with ya.. 12. First Aid kit. 13. a LOT of water. Sand dehydrates quickly. 14. baby powder or monkey butt powder for those chaped butts from not being used to riding that much.. 15. Toilet paper. crappers are always out. Especially if you have the ladies along.. 16. A way to stay warm at night it gets darn cold down there at night, it snowed one yr on april 5th in the morning when we got up.. and was 80 degrees by 2pm and extremely windy. 17. Goggles sand in the eyes sucks. Helmet not required but recommended. I am still here thanks to mine.. 18. Borrow or buy a flag must have to ride. 19. I heard the gate fee went up to 10 a day so cash is a must. 20. Asprin they come in handy for sunburns, sore butts, headaches from the night befores fun, ect.. 21. Quarters for the showers. 22. Extra straps they seem to disapear and break a lot on the way down.. 23. someone in the group should carry a tow strap in case one of you breakedown. If you have it you will not need it we find, but if you do not have it you ALWAYS end up needing it. 24. If your battery is questionable change it now it will fail the first night down there and the batteries must be old they keep in stock cause they where not much better than the one we had and very expensive.
Just a few of the things we have found as we have been down there a dozen times or so..
