It's time to tear my '85 250R apart for a facelift, and there's some polishing that I'd like to do. I've polished a lot of stuff in the past, but it's SUPER time consuming if you sand, sand, sand, and then buff it out on the polisher/grinder. I've got 3 different polishing paste bars, and various wheels, but nothing seems to work good at removing the rough surface to get to the point that things are ready to buff out. Anyone have experience in this, and have secrets to share that will cut out the days of sanding before the buffing stage? We have a project at work that is going to be powdercoated purple for Manhattan, and so I'm going with purple & white on this machine!

depending on how rough the material is, i've used a palm sander with 400 grit then just use some brown rouge. then i use the white rouge and finally mother's mag and aluminum polish seems to seal it for awhile.

I ended up buying a 90 deg. die grinder and some scotch-brite pads. I worked a bit on the top triple tree, and going to knock the rough edges off the forks this week. I'll clean off the bench (ugggghhhh, so much crap accumulated) and fire up the buffer this weekend. Pick up the freshly sand blasted parts tonight, and we "should" be powdering this special color before the end of next week. Not much time to get everything done before my trike trip to the dunes, but I think it will work out okay.

Trike, Your old way of doing it sanding sanding and sanding with incremental finer wet/dry sand paper then buff with incremental finer polish and finishing with mothers is my way also.. takes forever and a LOT of work but the results are awsume........
But on another note I have been playing with differant media in my little media blast cabinet and I really like the soda it leaves a smooth surface that is all but ready for powder coating, and painting. candy PC looks great over soda blasted aluminum.. walnuts as a media leaves a neat look too.

I am about to start quick polishing all my shiny stuff for the dunes. I plan on using a powerball and some mothers, but I know that is more of a maintaining process. I would loveto learn to do some better polishingin time.
