So this weekend I decided to FINALLY put on my FCI intake. As I was removing the old intake from the throttle body, I found sand throughout the intake and a small amount in the throttle body. Clearly sand was going through my air filter, which I admit, I should have replaced before the last dune trip. So to everyone heading out to little sahara, be sure to oil your prefilter before departing. Its pretty easy to guess that if sand was blowing threw, that my head, piston, and cylinder is all scored pretty badly(although you wouldn't know it from how well my raptor runs), and I feel like I could be on borrowed time with my motor. My biggest concern is that sand could possibly be rubbing against my valve springs. Now for the hard questions, in which I need some opinions on. Keep in mind, that I have probably put 20 hr on my quad since the last dune trip. Do I ride it out until I decide to go with a big bore kit and change everything anyways? Or do I do tear down now just to be sure everything is in working order? I really dont want to be the used car salesmen and put it up for sale, esp without checking everthing over first. It's just not my style, but I have thought of that option. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Most likely the biggest damage was done at your valves. Research has showed the the amount of sand entering the head is usually chewed up by the valves. With that said, I guess it really depends on the amount you are talking about. Chances are it was doing just that and sitting in your bowl. Cylinder could be scored but that can be fixed as well. Isay change the oil. clean the head and ride it.

Well the oil has be changed a couple times since the dune trip. I suppose the only way to figure out if anything has been seriously damaged is to dig in it and find out. So thats probably what I will do.

Do a compression test if it is within spec I would just ride it.. what damage that will be done was done before you left the sand.. It sounds like you change oil regularly and that probably washed most if not all the sand out of the engine.. PLUS most of the sand was probably caught at the carb or went out the exhaust as glass.. ;-)

Yea, hopefully there isnt to much wrong with it. I plan on taking the head off this weekend and doing a little inspection. Beings how my raptor is Fuel Injected, the sand is probably glass by now...lol
